Sunrise Community of Polk
County, Inc., a private,
not-for-profit organization,
founded “Wheely Amazing
Art™” in 2000, as a means of
creative expression for adults
with developmental
disabilities. Today, “Wheely
Amazing Art™” is a unique
entrepreneurial business that
gives artists with disabilities opportunities to explore
their creativity, learn business skills, and experience
the fulfillment of philanthropy by contributing their time
and products to the community.
Artists with cerebral palsy, mental retardation, and
autism design and paint bold, vibrant “canvases”
using adaptive art equipment, most of which attaches
to their wheelchairs. Every work of art is an
inimitable, collaborative effort. Artists create and sell a
variety of interesting products; such as gift boxes and
napkin rings. Professionally printed note cards and
framed art, featuring an assortment of “Wheely
Amazing Art” designs, are also available.
The Glenn W. and Hazelle Paxson Morrison
Foundation, The United Way of Central Florida,
The Community Foundation of Greater Lakeland,
City of Lakeland, and Geico are Wheely’s founding
donors. The program is currently supported through
sales, donations, grants, and the United Way of
Central Florida.
